Twitter may not be the most popular social media platform, but it’s certainly a way to cultivate conversation within a community.
First, though, comes the matter of becoming active.
That’s the first step toward that goal, Ben Hanten told a crowd of 25 people at a Twitter workshop Wednesday morning at the Avera Professional Pavilion.
“When we talk about having a startup community, one of the reasons I feel like we’re lagging is because we don’t have people on Twitter talking about these things,” Hanten said.
“That’s the goal.”
Held before the weekly 1 Million Cups gathering, the one-hour workshop focused on the basics to Twitter: Why join, how to get started, as well as such terminology as hashtags, retweets, favorites and followers.
Instagram recently surpassed Twitter with the most monthly active users (300 million, compared to over 280 million), but the latter has routinely been called the pulse of the society.
“Twitter is an instant snapshot of what’s happening in the world,” Hanten said.
Naturally, there are comparisons to Facebook, but the differences are significant — particularly when it comes to sharing content.
“Twitter is having a conversation, where Facebook is almost like moments you put on a wall,” Hanten said.
One key way to drive conversation on Twitter is using hashtags, Hanten told the crowd.
“On Twitter, you can find a whole new audience,” he said. “It becomes a way to build a network around you.”
Among the benefits to communicating with such a network is sharing critical information, according to Yankton School District superintendent Wayne Kindle — who was in the crowd Wednesday.
“It’s just another way to communicate with parents and other people,” he said, when asked why he started an account.
