Reports started coming out Friday afternoon that former University of South Dakota head football coach Ed Meierkort has accepted the same position at Celebration High School in Celebration, Fla. The public school is located just outside of Orlando.
Naturally, yes, it comes as a bit of surprise to me, but on the other hand, not so shocking when you think back to all the recruiting inroads Meierkort had made with the state of Florida.
Meierkort, 53, was fired from USD last November after coaching the Coyotes to a 54-35 record in eight seasons, the last four at the Division I FCS ranks. In 2010, his team upset FBS Minnesota, and in 2011, the Coyotes beat then No. 1 Eastern Washington.
There were, of course, other issues with the program, most notably with struggles on the road (capped off by 2 losses last season in which USD could have captured the Great West Conference title, but coughed up big leads in the second half).
In January of this year, Meierkort was one of six finalists for the head coaching position at Division II Colorado Mesa University. Russ Martin was eventually hired.
