Over the last week, I’ve had a barrage of tweets about changes and new players for the University of South Dakota men’s & women’s basketball teams.
Let’s examine some of the changes, first with the men’s team.
•• Junior forward Allen Saint-Gelais is done with basketball and is transitioning to football. He has been learning the ropes with the football squad during spring practices. One of the main areas of focus with him right now is learning the routes. Saint-Gelais appeared in 27 basketball games last season, averaging 5.5 points.
•• Junior forward Nick Mabbutt is reportedly looking to transfer, according to this list from CBS Sports. He only played in eight games last season.
•• USD got a verbal commitment from 6-foot-5 small forward Karim Rowson of Western Oklahoma State, as we reported last Wednesday. A native of Harlem, N.Y., he led the junior college in scoring (18 ppg) this past season as a sophomore.
•• USD also got a commitment from 6-7 forward Eric Robertson, a Maple Grove, Minn. native who spent this past season at IMG Academy — a prep school — in Florida. He was a Division I recruit out of high school in Wayzata, but chose the prep school route for one year.
On to the women’s team.
•• The Coyotes added another in-state walk-on, as Bailey Milne of Madison will join the program next season. The 5-foot-11 guard/forward had a good senior season for a struggling Madison Lady Bulldogs squad. Milne is the fourth South Dakota prep player to join the Coyotes, joining Heidi Hoff (Brandon Valley), Margaret McCloud (Rapid City Stevens) and walk-on Tia Hemiller (Watertown).
