VERMILLION — A month ago, the University of South Dakota basketball teams had one of their worst weekends of the season.
The men lost by an average of 26.5 points in loss at South Dakota State and North Dakota State, while the women lost by an average of 11.
This weekend, however, the Coyote men’s and women’s teams have a chance to exact some serious revenge — let’s call this Vermillion Vengeance.
USD started the 5-day weekend with a 72-68 upset of SDSU on Thursday night. Now the focus turns toward NDSU for tonight’s (Saturday) Summit League doubleheader against the Bison, at 5 and 7:30 p.m.
Each side of tonight’s contests features a significant difference. The NDSU men are third in the conference standings, while the USD men are tied with three other teams for the bottom spot at 4-10.
On the women’s side, USD sits third with a league record of 7-5, though the Coyotes are ineligible for the Summit League Championships this season. The Bison women, meanwhile, are eighth at 6-7.
The biggest “upset” tonight would be the Coyote men exacting some revenge on the Bison, who rolled to a 23-point beatdown in the first meeting.
If Thursday night is any indication, the USD men are out for some serious blood. Louie Krogman and Charlie Westbrook combined for 40 points and 12 assists against SDSU, and for the Coyotes to have any chance to beat the Bison, those two will need to step up tonight.
A sweep of NDSU would certainly put the Coyote squads in good shape for a weekend shape heading into Monday night’s USD-SDSU women’s showdown.
