Wednesday was sure loaded with some interesting news and notes from the University of South Dakota.
** First, the men’s and women’s track teams are out in Oregon for the NCAA West Region Preliminary meet, which starts today (Thursday) and runs through Saturday. The Coyotes qualified seven athletes, highlighted by five on the women’s team.
The top 12 finishers in each event will advance to the NCAA National Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, on June 8-11. Of the seven USD athletes out in Oregon, Bethany Buell figures to have the best chance for a national bid, as she comes in seeded ninth in the women’s pole vault.
** Second, the USD football team announced that it will play Kansas in 2013, down in Lawrence, Kan. The Coyotes are continuing a trend of scheduling regional games against Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools, beginning last season with Central Florida and Minnesota. USD has contracts to play Wisconsin and Air Force in 2011, Northwestern in 2012, Kansas in 2013 and Kansas State in 2015.
** Third, the volleyball team released its 2011 schedule, which includes 12 home matches and the first season in the Summit League. The Coyotes will also play in tournaments at Wyoming, Creighton and Montana. USD also has a home-and-home deal with Nebraska-Omaha, which joins the Summit League in 2012.
