The University of South Dakota football team saw its ups and downs this past season. The moment that stuck with me was the Coyotes win against Great West Conference opponent University of North Dakota.
This moment set the tone for the remainder of the season being in great position to make a run at a conference championship. USD has had trouble the past five years defeating UND and the Coyotes were able to get over the hump.
The reason why the first half clicked for USD. The defense of USD stepped up in a big way holding the offense of UND to three points. On the flip side the Coyotes offense scored 21 points in the first half led by two connections from Dante Warren to WIll Powell and one 65-yard hook up from Warren to Jeremy Blount.
The second half wasn’t the offensive explosion as it was in the first half, but freshman kick Kevin Robb made a 35 and 45-yard field goals. The defense was led by junior Adam Broders with 10 tackles, one fumble recovery and one interception.
Ever Coyote players that I had talked to this season wanted to make a statement by winning the conference championship. The season didn’t end the way they wanted to, but they got found out what it takes to rise from a good to a great football team.
