The Road To The Dome Begins

We are just hours from the kickoff of the South Dakota High School football playoffs, with 96 teams hoping to be one of the six left standing Nov. 11-13 in the DakotaDome in Vermillion.

The Press & Dakotan will have coverage of as many games as possible online and in print, as your source for sports in Southeast South Dakota adopts the entire state for the playoffs.

Both assistant sports editor Jeremy Hoeck and I have made our picks for the first round. Here are my winners, with upsets (by power points) in bold. You may also check out our playoff preview video.

Class 11AA: Washington, Pierre, Lincoln, Stevens, Roosevelt, Yankton, Mitchell, Watertown

Class 11A: Dell Rapids, Sisseton, Harrisburg, Dakota Valley, Pine Ridge, Little Wound, St. Thomas More, Belle Fourche

Class 11B: Roncalli, Redfield-Doland, Tri-Valley, Flandreau, Wagner, Bon Homme, Winner, Mobridge-Pollock

Class 9AA: Leola-Frederick, Deubrook Area, Chester Area, White Lake-Plankinton, Bridgewater-Emery-Ethan, Viborg-Hurley, Lemmon-McIntosh, Eureka-Bowdle

Class 9A: Wilmot, Castlewood, Hanson, Corsica-Stickney, Avon, Andes Central, Harding County, Sully Buttes

Class 9B: Waverly-South Shore, Hitchcock-Tulare, Canistota, Dell Rapids St. Mary, Gettysburg, Colome, Timber Lake, Langford (Langford is not an upset even though they are the road team. They are a wild card team and cannot host in the first round.)
