Late Monday night, the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) released its 2010-11 preseason coaches women’s and men’s basketball preseason polls.
On the women’s side, defending national champion Northwestern was the runaway favorite, receiving 11 of 12 first-place votes (the other went to Hastings). Mount Marty College was picked to finish seventh.
On the men’s side, Sioux Falls was tabbed No. 1, with 10 first-place votes. Briar Cliff and Dakota Wesleyan got the other top votes. Mount Marty was picked to finish 10th, in a tie with Midland.
If you’re looking at where the league coaches selected Mount Marty, on first glance, it looks about accurate at this point. I’d imagine the MMC women will make a significant jump throughout the season — the Lancers do lose all-everything Michelle Amundson, but bring back a loaded crew along with arguably the program’s best recruiting class. Plus, MMC will boast eight players 5-foot-10 or taller. EIGHT.
We’ll learn more as each team nears its season.
