On Thursday, the University of South Dakota held its annual Football Media Day over in Vermillion. And as usual, there were some interesting jottings to come out of the press conference and subsequent interviews.
Here are some tidbits that didn’t make it into today’s P&D story.
** To me, the most interesting aspect to the 2010 season for the Coyotes are the first two games. For the first time in its Division I transition, USD will play a guarantee game against an FBS school. Yet, not only will the Coyotes play TWO such games, they come on consecutive weekends to open the season. As USD coach Ed Meierkort (right) mentioned during his outlook, it may be a “little early for this, but you know, our kids don’t care.” And from talking with a handful of players, it sounds like there’s a consensus — the team wants to play the big boys.
** At this point in fall camp, the Coyotes are not unlike other teams when it comes to injuries. Meierkort pointed out a handful of injuries — Cody O’Neill (RFr., OL) is out for the season with a torn ACL, he was battling for the starting center gig. Broc Gullett (Jr., OL) has a dislocated patella tendon, while Matt Kerswill (RFr., WR) has a turf toe, Chase Irvin-Salazar (Fr., DL) is recovering from MCL surgery. Starting safety Jim Thompson (Jr.) is also battling a slight calf injury.
** Though USD will have a new quarterback this season, Meierkort said the position isn’t something that overly concerns him. Junior Dante Warren assumes the starting duties, while transfer Brandon Gorsuch (Jr.) is the No. 2. However, Meierkort again sang the praises of Tyler Wilhelm (RFr.), who had two shoulder surgeries last season and never really got going after being heavily recruited out of Florida. I wouldn’t be surprised if Wilhelm sees some game action this season.
** In an interesting non-football note, former USD defensive lineman Wayne Curry appeared as an extra on the popular HBO show “Entourage.” Not sure exactly what episode Curry can be seen, but according to Meierkort, fans would be able to quickly recognize him.
