Laura Ekeren To Play For The South Dakota Coyotes

VERMILLION — One of the top girls’ soccer players in Yankton will be staying close to home.
Laura Ekeren, a first-team all-state selection in 2009 and a three-time letterwinner for the Gazelles, will attend the University of South Dakota and play women’s soccer for the Coyotes, the institution announced Wednesday.
Ekeren, a forward and midfielder, scored 17 goals for the Gazelles in 2009. She also earned honorable mention all-state recognition in 2008.
The 5-7 standout was also a member of the girls’ basketball team at Yankton, earning all-conference honors. She will participate in the South Dakota High School Coaches Association All-Star Game next week in Aberdeen.
Ekeren is one of four recruits announced by USD on Wednesday, joining Billie Enderby of Rapid City; Tayler Giannini of St. Charles, Ill.; and Brittany Henderson of Keller, Texas.
“We’re pleased to add these four individuals for the 2010 season,” USD head coach Mandy Green said in a press release. “We’re excited about their potential impact on our program.”
The four join Ali Romano of Galesburg, Ill., and Kerry Grogan, Afton Keiser and Jennifer Teslow, all of Sioux Falls, as USD recruits for 2010.
The University of South Dakota opens the 2010 season under first-year head coach Green on Aug. 20 at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. The Coyotes make their home debut Aug. 27 against Missouri-Kansas City.
