I know we are in the midst of summer, but the Press & Dakotan has already received the Yankton High School athletic schedules for the 2010-11 school year.
The big ones are already known by many. Yankton hosts two state tournaments in a week’s span in November, cheer and dance on Nov. 13, and AA volleyball Nov. 18-20. Yankton does not host a single Eastern South Dakota Conference championshp this school year. (Track is in Watertown, which means ESD will be at Williams Field in 2012.)
Here are some of the highlights.
FOOTBALL: The schedule looks much like last year, except with the sites reversed. The Bucks open at Rapid City Central Aug. 28. Homecoming is Sept. 17 against Mitchell. The Bucks host rival O’Gorman Oct. 1. The playoffs start Oct. 26, with the finals set for Nov. 13 at the DakotaDome. A side note for football, the middle school teams will play three out-of-town opponents this season, adding Harrisburg to the mix (Sept. 30).
CROSS COUNTRY: The season open with the O’Gorman Invitational Aug. 27. The only home varsity meets are the Invitational on Sept. 23 and the Brandon Valley/Mitchell triangular Oct. 14. State is Oct. 23 in Huron.
BOYS’ GOLF: The Bucks open at the Brandon Valley Tournament Aug. 16, the Monday before Riverboat Days. They play four events at home, all in a 15-day span, with the Yankton Invitaional Sept. 10. State is Oct. 4-5 at Huron.
GIRLS’ TENNIS: The Gazelles make their debut under new head coach Ginger Larsen on Aug. 21, the Saturday of Riverboat Days Weekend, with a quad featuring Vermillion, Watertown and Rapid City Stevens. They will only have two home dates after that, Sept. 7 with O’Gorman and Sept. 9 with Vermillion and Todd County. They will play as many dates in Brookins as they do in Yankton. State is Oct. 7-9 in Rapid City.
CHEER AND DANCE: Katie Nelson’s debut as the Yankton competitive dance coach comes in the Yankton Invitational, Sept. 11. For the third time in four years the Gazelles begin and end their season at home, as state is Nov. 13 at the Summit Center.
VOLLEYBALL: The Gazelles could be playing for a shot to play state at home this year, as the Class AA championships will be in the Summit Nov. 18-20. The Gazelles have an 18-match regular season schedule, opening at home Aug. 27-28 against Pierre and Huron.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL: The Gazelles will open the season in the same city in which they hope to end it, Brookings. Yankton plays the Bobcats Dec. 10, a journey they hope ends across town at Frost Arena March 10-12. The team plays its usual 20-game schedule, with the four Sioux Falls schools and two Rapid City schools being the non-conference opponents.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL: Like the girls, the Bucks play the four Sioux Falls and two Rapid City schools as their non-conference opponents. Also like the girls, the boys’ first road game will be in the city they hope to finish their season in. After a Dec. 10 opener at home against Brookings, the Bucks travel to Sioux Falls Washington. State is set for March 17-19 at Sioux Falls Arena.
GYMNASTICS: The Gazelles will be home just three times in 2010-11, two before Christmas. After opening Nov. 29 in a triangular at Sioux Falls Washington, the Gazelles host O’Gorman and Roosevelt Dec. 2. They also host a JV matchup with Wagner’s varsity Dec. 13, and a dual with Vermillion Jan. 20. State is Feb. 18-19 at Watertown.
WRESTLING: I detect a recurring theme: Road opener is in the city where state will be. The Bucks open at Sioux Falls Washington Nov. 30. Washington, coincidentally, will host the Region 2A meet Feb. 17-18. State is Feb. 25-26 at Sioux Falls Arena. The Bucks have four events at home, the Invitational Dec. 11 and three triangulars.
GIRLS’ GOLF: The Gazelles will look to build on their runner-up team finish, beginning with an April 4 dual at Brandon Valley. Yankton has five home events, the first three in an eight-day span in April. State is May 23-24 at Brookings.
BOYS’ TENNIS: Brady Muth makes his boys’ tennis coaching debut April 2, as the Bucks host Vermillion and Sioux City Heelan in a triangular. Yankton has a whopping eight home dates in 2011, including five of the first six events. State will be May 19-21 at Sioux Falls.
TRACK & FIELD: Yankton is scheduled to open with the Relay Carnival March 22, though the event has yet to be held since it was added to the schedule. The same can be said for the Early Bird Individual Event Meet on March 31. Yankton has five other home meets, including the First Dakota Relays on April 28 and the Last Chance Meet May 19. State is May 27-28 at Brandon and Sioux Falls. (A note: it was announced earlier this month that the Class AA portion of the state track meet will be held at O’Gorman in 2014.)
