By virtue of winning the Great West Conference Tournament on Saturday, the USD men’s basketball team earned a bid into the second-year CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT).
Quite an accomplishment for a second-year Division I program.
The only question today was, who would the Coyotes play in the first round?
Well, that question was answered. USD (22-9) will play Creighton (16-15) on Tuesday night in Omaha, Neb. at 7 p.m.
As I type this at 10:40 p.m. on Sunday night, the full field for the CIT has not been announced yet. You can check out the tournament page right here.
But here are some of the schools among the 16-team field — Marshall, George Mason, Appalachian State, Missouri State, Northern Colorado and Portland. Certainly some quality names there.
OK, now what exactly is the CIT? (I’ve heard that quite a bit already tonight)
The CIT is basically a tournament for mid-major schools that slipped through the cracks of other postseason gatherings (NCAA, NIT or CBI). It’s a single elimination, four-round setup, with games played at on-campus sites. The championship game, set for March 30, will be televised on Fox College Sports.
Sometime Monday, I’ll post another entry, with more of a look at the USD-Creighton game. And yes, the Press & Dakotan will be on hand in Omaha for coverage.
