Great West Teleconference 10/19

Some news, notes and quotes from today’s Great West Conference football coaches media teleconference.

** In action over the weekend: USD lost to Montana State 31-24 in overtime; North Dakota lost to NAIA Sioux Falls 28-13; UC Davis beat Winston-Salem State 45-14; and Cal Poly edged Southern Utah 24-23.

** Despite the win, Cal Poly dropped to No. 20 in the latest FCS Media Poll. Interestingly, notice that North Dakota is still receiving votes.

** As you can imagine, the talk of the teleconference was about that UND loss to Sioux Falls. Talking about the game, UND coach Chris Mussman said, “It was one of those deals where they came up, had a good gameplan and executed well … We had a bunch of penalties and turnovers; you can’t win games doing that.” Mussman also said his senior leaders called a players-only meeting yesterday.

** Said USD coach Ed Meierkort about the Sioux loss: “USF is in a non-competitive situation until the playoffs …. I can understand how you can get bit …. You’ve got to be careful when you put your hands on that stove.”

** On his own team’s second-straight overtime loss, Meierkort said, “These kids have been very resilient … If we keep busting our rear ends off, we’ll get a break and win one of these games in overtime.”

** Also for the second-straight week, a Great West Conference game was essentially decided by a missed extra point in overtime. After Southern Utah scored a late touchdown at Cal Poly, the SUU kicker pulled the point after wide right. Cal Poly would hang on to win 24-23. Said Cal Poly coach Tim Walsh, “I’ve been on the other side of those things, and it’s no fun. That’s a tough pill to swallow for them.”

** In action next weekend: North Dakota is at Southern Utah; UC Davis is at Portland State; and Cal Poly hosts Dixie State.
