Great West Teleconference 09/21

Some news, notes and quotes from today’s Great West Conference football coaches media call:

** In action on Saturday: South Dakota beat Drake 51-21; Southern Utah dropped a 42-39 nail-biter to Northern Arizona; Cal Poly lost to Ohio University 28-10; and North Dakota beat Northwestern State 27-20

** Following the win over Drake, USD now prepares for a rematch with Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday in the DakotaDome. Last season down in Hammond, La., the Coyotes dropped a 31-30 loss after a game-winning two-point conversion with no time remaining came up short on a fumble. Said USD coach Ed Meierkort about the rematch: “Our kids are excited to compete, finally, in the Dome for a game where people will give us recognition if we win.”

** North Dakota (1-1) will make its third consecutive road trip to the deep South for a Saturday showdown with Stephen F. Austin. The Sioux lost the season opener to Texas Tech and then beat Northwestern State (La.) this weekend. Said UND coach Chris Mussman about Stephen F. Austin: “As a coach, you almost hate to say this, but this team scares me a little bit.”

** Although his team lost, Southern Utah quarterback Cade Cooper earned Great West Offensive Player of the Week honors after passing for 425 yards and four touchdowns without an interception against Northern Arizona. Following stints at BYU and Oregon, Cooper was named the National Junior College Player of the Year last fall.

** On a question about scheduling Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponents, UC Davis coach Bob Biggs said the Aggies will face California and San Jose State next season.

** In action this week: USD hosts Southeastern Louisiana; UC Davis hosts Western Oregon; Cal Poly is at San Jose State; North Dakota is at Stephen F. Austin; and Southern Utah is at Utah State
