Happy New Year’s Eve, everyone.
In the final action of 2008 for the USD men’s basketball team, the Coyotes are hosting Mayville State in a makeup game.
USD (10-5) has won seven straight games and is coming off a 77-61 win over St. Olaf last night.
The MVSU Comets come in 5-9 with two straight losses. They have two players averaging double figures, with Ron Dunlap (14.8) and Jake Gonzales (14.3). A total of 11 guys have started a game this season, with only one starting every game.
The thing to watch for tonight: How the USD guys suffering from the flu are able to perform today. Coach Dave Boots was very cautious last night in his expectation for today’s game. And also, keep an eye on Jesse Becker. Dude has scored 69 points in his last three games, and played last night with a wrap on his right elbow.

More massive Internet delays in the Dome prevented me from blogging in the Dome in the first half.
We’re at halftime, with USD leading 47-22.
For USD, Roman Gentry has 14 points (6-of-6 from the line), while Mitch Begeman has 9 and Dylan Grimsley has 8. The Coyotes have hit 13-of-16 free throws.
Mayville State, which is just simply over-matched, got 8 points from Drew Bergerson. Dude has to be the doppleganger of Arizona’s Chase Buddinger. Google him. It’s scary.

At the first timeout of the second half, USD leads 65-36. The teams have combined to hit five threes in the last six scores. Gentry is having a breakout game right now. Dude has 21 points already, and will head to the free throw line (charity stripe?) after the media timeout. Gentry has been all over the floor, skying for rebounds, making nice passes, driving to the lane and hitting his free throws. The Coyotes are up 68-36 after the free throw.
Gentry hits a pair of free throws at the 8:38 mark to give him 30 points for the game. USD is up 85-53 with 6:15 to play. Grimsley has 16 points, and the two Sioux City, Iowa, natives are a combined 18-of-18 from the free throw line. Not bad, especially with Grimsley battling the flu. Also, Cain has 11 points and 10 rebounds — also with the flu.
So, more Internet problems in the Dome. You know, a guy can get really frustrated.
Anyway, USD won 99-63. Gentry led the way with 30 points.
