Great West Teleconference 10/13

A quick look at what was said and what went down at this afternoon’s Great West Conference football coaches weekly media call:

** It was a light weekend in the Great West, with just two games. UC Davis beat Southern Utah 49-26 and South Dakota beat Missouri S&T 34-3. So far there have been just two league games, and both have had similar scores. Cal Poly topped USD 49-22 and UC Davis topped Southern Utah 49-26.

** After a week off, the Cal Poly Mustangs close the season with 4 of 6 games at home. One of those road games is this Saturday in Brookings against South Dakota State. Said Cal Poly coach Rich Ellerson about the Jacks, “They’re such a disciplined, hard-playing outfit. It’s a tough place to play up there.”

** Speaking of third-ranked Cal Poly, wide receiver Ramses Barden has been invited to play in the annual East-West Shrine Game, which be televised on ESPN 2 on Jan. 17, 2009 in Houston. Ellerson said there are typically two or three NFL scouts checking out the 6-6 Barden each week.

** With two full weeks off before its next game Nov. 1, the USD Coyotes are taking a few days off from practice this week, head coach Ed Meierkort said. Members of the coaching staff will be on the road recruiting for parts of the next week and a half. Meierkort, who called the long break a “sabbatical,” said he’s only had one other such two-week layoff in his coaching career, and that came back in September 2001.

** Speaking of 2-week breaks, North Dakota returns to action Saturday after a long layoff. The Sioux host former NCC foe Western Washington, an opponent UND coach Chris Mussman said is, “explosive offensively. They certainly don’t have problems scoring points … this team truly has our respect.”

** Southern Utah opened Great West play with a 49-26 loss at UC Davis on Saturday, but SUU head coach Ed Lamb said, “the offensive guys, for the first time this year, made an effort to carry our team. If there’s any part to be encouraged about, that’d be it.”

** UC Davis, which moved to 3-4 overall, hosts Iona on Saturday. Head coach Bob Biggs said, “It’s difficult when you’re not familiar with an opponent and who they’ve played.”

** In league action next Saturday, Cal Poly is at SDSU, UC Davis hosts Iona and North Dakota hosts Western Washington.
