USD Recruiting: Joe Glenn….The Closer

Someone asked me Wednesday afternoon my overall thoughts on the recruiting class for the University of South Dakota.

Interesting question.

One of USD's prized recruits on Wednesday was Sheridan (Wyo.) running back Jordan Roberts. (PHOTO: Blaine McCartney/The Sheridan Press)

On the one hand, how exactly do you judge the pool of recruits made up of mostly 18-year-old high school seniors? Can you really know much of anything right now?

Then, on the other hand, wouldn’t every coach at every level say they were pleased with who they got? (Would you actually expect a coach to say, “No, the guys we got are a waste of our time; wasn’t a good day for us?”).

Pondering those questions, I settled on, “Considering what USD went through two months ago, I’d say better than expected.”

Think about it: Back in late November, the USD coaching staff had made impressive headway on its 2012 recruiting class — snagging a verbal commitment from a 3-star lineman (Chris Wiseman) and a handful of other kids.

Then, Nov. 23 rolls around and Ed Meierkort gets fired, taking some by surprise, others not so much. Suddenly, it’s chaos. The coaches remaining were left scrambling, left to reassure secured recruits and potential recruits that all was well in Vermillion.

Two weeks later, in strolls Joe Glenn, an experienced coach with three national championships and a kind of rah-rah energy infectious to everyone around him.

Instant credibility.

Next comes three new assistant coaches, tasked with not only assuming their new duties, but responsible for jumping head-first into recruiting.

There were simply no shortage of obstacles for the Coyote program over the last two and a half months. It was the kind of instability that could have swallowed an entire recruiting class, leaving the team to take what it could get and move on from there.

Not so, Glenn said Wednesday afternoon — in his typical one-liner fashion.

“Recruiting is like shaving. If you don’t do it every day, you look like a bum.”

All told, it looks like the Coyotes missed out on just one verbal commitment, a linebacker from Florida signed with Eastern Kentucky following a late visit.

Joe Glenn: Recruiting closer.

“We didn’t get them all, but that’s all right,” he said. “When you have a lot of plates spinning, once in a while one falls off.”

What didn’t fall off, by the looks of it, was USD’s recruiting.

  1. Our son, Matt Miller signed on National Signing Day with USD on 2/1/2012. He was the Tight End from Omaha Skutt. He had full ride offers from D-I – Army, IL State, Tulsa, Northern Colorado, UND, SDSU, & NDSU, D-II – NSU & NWMSU to name a few (see rivals.com). He was also a preferred walkon for NE & IA. He was offered as a Junior in 2011 from USD and was not going to even make a visit to USD because of the change in coaching until in December when Joe Glenn made an in-home visit to Omaha to see all of us. I can only hope the city of Vermillion and the state of South Dakota embraces him & USD like we did!!! He is an alum of USD and a native Nebraskan, He is a man of his word and wants to bring back tradition into Vermillion. We fell in love with him. He is a man of character and a man that has vision. Our family is spreading the great word of Joe Glenn to all of Nebraska, as we are hoping that the recruiting picks up in Nebraska and the talented players from the Omaha/Lincoln area choose USD in lieu of walking on at NE. Not only is USD academic school, but you get Joe Glenn, Brett Harvey & Wes Breschomer – the best of the best – in our opinion….We are hoping that USD gets a following like no other and we will be leading the way!!! GO YOTES!!!!!
